Dear Incoming Second Grade Parents, 

We want to take this opportunity to welcome you and your child to second grade.  We are looking forward to an exciting and challenging year ahead.  

As you begin to prepare your child for second grade in September, it is necessary that you not take a “summer vacation” from the skills that the children learned in first grade.  In order to help keep those skills sharp, Rising Second Graders will have summer assignments to complete.  We are providing two packets that the children can work on weekly throughout the summer. 

We are asking that each student complete 2 page of ELA and 2 pages of math weekly. If your child can complete additional pages, they are included for additional practice. We are also asking the children to read two assigned books and complete one book report. The packets and book reports are due the first day of school and will count as your child's first Reading and Math grades.

Another area that your child should not take a vacation from is the review of addition and subtraction facts.  If you don’t already have a set, pick up a set of addition and subtraction flash cards.  You can purchase an inexpensive set at Walmart, Barnes and Nobles, Target, Amazon and other retail stores.  Please see attached note for additional information on Math Facts.  

We have also included a list of the Dolch Sight words.  Your child should know these words.  Please review these words with your child throughout the summer months. 

SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS: In preparation for second grade, the children are required to read two assigned books, complete one book report and complete 2 math and 2 ELA pages weekly.  Again, if your child is capable of completing additional pages, he or she is welcome to do so.

Please make sure that they do read these books and bring the books to school with them in September, as they will be completing activities based upon them in the first week of school.   We have selected new books this year in 2nd grade.
